julie johnson is an Aberdeen native who always wanted to go to law school and return to her home town. After 25 years in Pierre of using her law degree in unique ways, she has returned to her home town. Today she serves as Executive Director of Absolutely!Aberdeen and Prairie Vision. She was raised in the third generation of her family’s business in Aberdeen, and wanted to be a lawyer since the 6th grade.
She followed her career path dream, which lead to the University of South Dakota, and then back to Aberdeen where she practiced law for 7 ½ years. Then one day Governor Janklow called, and asked her to come work for him in his Cabinet. She was too intrigued to say “no”.
From there, she served as Secretary of the South Dakota Department of Labor, President of the Industry and Commerce Association of South Dakota (now known as the SD Chamber of Commerce and Industry), Secretary of the Department of Revenue, Executive Director of the South Dakota Rural Development Council, and then served as a judge in the State’s administrative law system.
In 2007, she was invited to come back from Pierre to Aberdeen, her home town, to run a community growth initiative called “Absolutely!Aberdeen”, and its regional development arm, “Prairie Vision”. She serves as a lobbyist in Pierre on behalf of several Aberdeen and area groups, serving as a voice for this region in the Legislature.
Throughout her unique career path, she has been fortunate to blend her interests with her degrees and other skills. |

Benjamin Victor
“ A gift from God” is how Benjamin Victor describes his natural ability to create inspiring and expressive works of art. Benjamin joined the ranks of Michelangelo, Bernini, and Daniel Chester French by receiving his first large commission at only 23 years old. At age 26, he became the youngest artist ever to have a sculpture in our Nation’s foremost collection of figurative sculpture, the National Statuary Hall in the United States Capitol. Art critics and organizations, including the National Sculpture Society in New York City, continue to recognize the aesthetic and conceptual integrity of Benjamin’s artwork. His incredible passion and drive clearly show in each of his unique and profound creations. Patty kirkpatrick
Marketing & public relations director - avera st. luke's
Patty grew up on a farm near Hosmer, South Dakota. After graduating from high school there, she made the 55-mile move east to Aberdeen to attend Northern State University. After graduating with a degree in Music Education, she found there were no music positions open in the Aberdeen region. Since her husband had a local business, she looked for other jobs in Aberdeen. She took a position as a sales representative for KKAA-AM and KQAA-FM Radio, a new broadcast media company that opened its doors in 1975. In addition to local sales, Patty became the regional/agency sales rep for the company.
After nine years in the media business, Patty took the position of Director of Marketing & Public Relations at Avera St. Luke’s. In the beginning, it was a one-person department, but over the years she has added an associate, a writer, and a graphic arts technician as the needs of the hospital and other divisions continue to grow. Patty feels she is an example of how one can parlay their education, skills and talents from one field of interest into an unrelated field and still be successful.
Patty has served on the Marketing Committee of the Chamber of Commerce, has been involved with various community organizations such as Monday Musicale Club, Aberdeen Community Concert Association, United Way, American Cancer Society, and PEO, and has served various offices of the South Dakota Association of Healthcare Marketing and Public Relations. She belongs to Bethlehem Lutheran Church where she can still cultivate her love of music. |
